"Down" โ from sit, lure treat to the floor between paws. When elbows hit floor = treat + "YES!"
"Stay" โ ask for sit, hold palm out, wait 2 seconds, treat. Build up to 10 seconds, then 30.
"Leave it" โ put treat in closed fist. When they stop trying to get it = treat from OTHER hand. Life-saving command.
Leash intro: Let them wear the leash around the house. Don't pull. Follow THEM first, then guide gently.
Socialization window: This is CRITICAL. Before 16 weeks, expose them to: other dogs (vaccinated), people of all ages, different surfaces, car rides, loud sounds. Positive experiences only.
Potty: Accidents are still normal. Clean with enzyme cleaner (Nature's Miracle). No punishment for accidents.
Month 3-6: Adolescence (16 weeks - 6 months)
Goal: Stay consistent. They WILL test boundaries. This is normal.
Teenage phase: Your sweet puppy will suddenly "forget" everything. They didn't forget โ they're testing. Stay calm, stay consistent.
Increase training to 10-minute sessions. Add distractions gradually.
"Place" โ teach them to go to a specific bed/mat and stay there. Amazing for when guests come over.
Loose leash walking: Stop walking when they pull. Only move forward when leash is loose. This takes WEEKS. Be patient.
Recall practice: Practice "come" in the backyard with a long leash. Build up to off-leash in safe areas.
Teething: Provide lots of chew toys. Frozen washcloths help sore gums. Redirect chewing from furniture to toys.
Stick to a routine โ dogs thrive on predictability
DON'T
Leave them alone for 8+ hours without a break
Let them chew on shoes/furniture without redirecting
Ignore destructive behavior โ it means they're bored or stressed
Skip vet visits โ annual checkups catch problems early
Forget dental care โ brush teeth or use dental chews
๐ณ Outside
DO
Always leash in unfenced areas
Pick up after your dog โ every time
Let them sniff on walks โ that's their social media
Check for ticks after walks in nature
Bring water on hot days
Teach them to be calm around other dogs
DON'T
Walk on hot pavement โ test with your hand (5 seconds)
Let them off-leash until recall is 100% reliable
Force interactions with dogs or people they're scared of
Leave them in a hot car โ EVER (even 5 minutes can kill)
Let them eat random things off the ground
๐ Socialization
DO
Introduce to new people/dogs gradually and positively
Let them approach on their own terms
Socialize before 16 weeks (critical window)
Expose to different sounds, surfaces, environments
Pair new experiences with treats and praise
DON'T
Force them into scary situations
Let strange dogs rush up to yours
Take unvaccinated puppies to dog parks
Ignore signs of fear (tail tucked, whale eye, lip licking)
Assume all dogs want to be friends โ some don't, and that's OK
